Reusing end-of-life solar cells to produce silicon
Indian scientists have produced high-purity silicon ingots from recycled solar cells using "spark plasma sintering" (SPS). They claim that they could achieve a level of purity comparable to that of commercially available products. They claim to have produced small ingots with purity levels of 98-99%.
These purity levels are slightly above the 3N purity level, which is higher than metallurgical grade silicon. They want to reach the 5N level, enabling the manufacture of new solar cells.
