European grids will put the brakes on renewable energy installations between now and 2030

Rethink Energy predicts that the expansion of the electricity grid will slow down by 2030, due to supply chain constraints and the need to obtain permits. The choice of materials

is further complicating efforts to modernise the network, with copper and aluminium becoming the main options for the production of cables and lines. The COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions have disrupted supply chains, leading to delays in critical components such as power transformers.

To improve the network, energy can be stored, with green hydrogen a potential solution. Digitisation of the grid is emerging as a key factor in efficient resource management and the integration of different energy sources.
