Solar jobs in Europe: up sharply in 2022 on 2021

Solar jobs in Europe have risen from 466,000 at the end of 2021 to 648,000 at the end of 2022, an increase of 39%. According to SolarPower Europe, this growth will continue.

over the next few years, and will employ more than a million people by 2025. This is much faster than previously thought. This level was expected to be reached in 2030.

These 648,000 jobs break down into 542,400 in installations (84% of the total), 52,000 in operation and maintenance (8%), 48,000 in industry (7%), and 5,000 in recycling (1%).

The focus on plant deployment explains why Europe has added 40.2 GW by 2022

Jobs

SolarPower Europe points out that we are beginning to worry about the number of jobs. The organisation urges us not to forget the quality of training in the profession. Indeed, rooftop solar remains the dominant force in Europe, accounting for 60% of the continent's total solar capacity in 2022 and adding 25 GW of new capacity that year, compared with 17 GW of new capacity the year before.

The union says this imbalance in employment must be corrected if SolarPower Europe's optimistic forecasts for the future of European solar power are to be realised.

The group also expects considerable growth in the European manufacturing sector, reaching 61,725 jobs in the low scenario, 98,171 jobs in the medium scenario and 129,193 jobs in the high scenario by 2027. The alliance aims to expand Europe's annual manufacturing capacity to 30 GW by 2025, up from 8 GW of annual panel capacity in 2022.

Editor's note Is it possible to double the number of jobs in the industry in five years? Is it credible?
