European solar irradiance in May
DNV subsidiary Solcast presents the solar irradiance data it collected for Europe in May. Below-average cloud cover meant above-normal irradiance for much of the UK, France, Germany, the Baltic countries and Scandinavia,
with anomalies of up to 30% and 40% above climatological averages.
In May, the high-pressure belt moved much further north - across Scotland, Norway and the Baltic countries - bringing more sunshine to the north, while allowing more low-pressure systems, thunderstorms and clouds to form over the Mediterranean.
High pressure brought moisture from the Atlantic to southern Europe, producing record levels of precipitation. The heavy rainfall, combined with a prolonged period of drought, caused flooding in Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, the Balkans and Italy, where flooding killed 13 people.
