MEPs' climate pressure listened to
Before the Commission President delivers her first State of the Union address to the European Parliament, some MEPs are calling for further emission reductions. The current target is 40%,
Some advocate 50%, others 60-65% by 2030.
The Parliament's specialised committee suggests setting a target of 80-85% by 2040 compared to 1990, with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
The new target for 2030 foresees that around 30% of the EU budget should be used for climate-related spending, in line with the objective of the Paris agreement.

Editor's note The forecasts are so long term that they are highly likely to be challenged by external events. These elements are by definition unpredictable. For example, it is currently unknown when the coronavirus will have disappeared from Europe and what devastation it will cause in the near future.
