Schmid and Fraunhofer ISE have designed two flexible production lines for BIPV

The Fraunhofer Institute ISE and equipment supplier Schmid jointly developed a production line for customised panels that would be integrated into the building. The cost could be reduced by 35%.

Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) has shown great potential in recent years. In order to develop, it must meet the requirements of architects and building professionals. Aesthetic choices and panel design are just as important as performance. The two partners, funded by the German Ministry of Economics and Energy, examined existing standards, the design of BIPV panels, and the potential and requirements of the market.

The two partners designed two new flexible production lines for the panels: they can be quickly adapted to different customer requirements such as format, colour, glass thickness, cells used and encapsulation material. Above all, it was found that series production and design freedom were not mutually exclusive: a saving of 35% could be achieved compared to conventional BIPV panel production.
