Le stockage de l'énergie par gravité, comme l'hydro-pompe, repose sur un principe simple : utiliser de l'énergie pendant la phase de charge du système : il transporte une masse solide d'un niveau inférieur vers un niveau supérieur. Il fournit de l’énergie en abaissant la masse ce qui entraine un générateur électrique. Plus la masse en question sera élevée, plus sa descente dégagera d'énergie.
