Sunshine in Europe in December

In December, clouds covered a large area stretching from the Baltic States to the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, reducing irradiation over northern Europe,

central and western regions. This region received only 70% of the normal irradiation. As winter days are particularly short, the baseline average is particularly low.

This is in line with El Nino years, which are characterised by generally milder and wetter weather at the start of winter in northern Europe, becoming colder and drier as the months go by.

By contrast, southern Europe received much less cloud and rain. Some regions experienced 130% of normal irradiation.

On the other hand, several major storms produced large amounts of wind power.
