The ten biggest developers over the period mid-2022 / mid-2023: six Europeans!

According to Mercom Capital, the world's top ten solar power plant developers have committed to building 145 GW between July 2022 and June 2023.

TotalEnergies became the world's leading solar developer with 41 GW thanks to its projects in operation, under construction and under power purchase agreement (PPA).

Indian renewable energy developer Adani Green Energy came second with 18.1 GW, followed by Canada's Brookfield Renewable Partners with 18 GW.

If we confine ourselves to projects under construction and power purchase agreements (PPAs), TotalEnergies is also in the lead with 29 GW, followed by Brookfield Renewable Partners (13.6 GW) and Adani Green Energy (11.1 GW).

Looking at the developers with the most operational large-scale solar capacity, TotalEnergies again tops the list with 12 GW. Enel Green Power, the renewable energy arm of Italian energy company Enel, was the second largest with 9.2 GW, followed by Adani Green Energy with 7 GW.

Of the total capacity of 145 GW, 50 GW is operational, 29 GW is under construction and 66 GW is in the form of PPAs.

Six of the world's ten largest solar developers are based in Europe, three in North America and one in Asia.

The changes between mid-2020/mid-2021 and mid-2022/mid-2023 are considerable. Two years ago, Lightsource bp, Canadian Solar and Brookfield Renewable Partners were the top three companies with the highest rates of operation, construction and development and PPA contracts.
