Chinese production for July and August

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has published operational data for the country's photovoltaic panel manufacturing sector for July and August 2023.

National silicon production reached 233,500 tonnes,

an increase of 94% over one year.

National wafer production reached 98.9 GW, an increase of 84% over one year.

National cell production reached 85 GW, an increase of 78% over one year. Over eight months, national cell production reached 320 GW.

Domestic panel production reached 77 GW, an increase of 78% year-on-year. Exports reached 33 GW, an increase of 11% year-on-year.

The value of exports of photovoltaic products such as wafers, cells and modules reached $36.2 billion, up just 1% year-on-year. This reflects the fall in prices in the sector.

Over eight months, domestic glass production reached 15.9 million tonnes, an increase of 65% year-on-year.

The price of 2mm and 3.2mm glass over this period was RMB18.4 ($2.52) per square metre and RMB25.6 ($3.51) per square metre respectively, down 12.2% and 6% year-on-year. In August, average prices were 18.2 RMB ($2.49) per square metre and 25.3 RMB ($3.46) per square metre respectively, with year-on-year declines of 11.7% and 5.4%.

PV Tech of 13 October 2023

Editor's note The 77 GW produced in July-August compares with 43 GW in 2022, i.e. an additional 34 GW. Exports of 33 GW in 2023 compared with 30 GW in 2022, i.e. 3 GW more. This means that Chinese manufacturers have either sold an additional 31 GW in China, or kept these 31 GW in stock.

Chinese manufacturers have increased their production capacity to such an extent that the problem of selling these panels arises, especially after oversupplying various parts of the world.
