Coal's share of global electricity generation declines only slightly

In the G20 countries, wind and solar power will have reached a combined share of 13% of electricity by 2022, up from 5% in 2015. Over this period,

the share of wind power has doubled and that of solar power has quadrupled. Coal's share of global electricity production, meanwhile, has fallen from 43% in 2015 to just 39% in 2022. The share of other sources of electricity has remained stable overall, with fluctuations of only 1 to 2 percentage points, according to Ember.

A majority of G20 countries (13 of them) will still have more than half of their electricity from fossil fuels in 2022. Saudi Arabia stands out, with almost 100% of its electricity from oil and gas. South Africa (86%), Indonesia (82%) and India (77%) are the next biggest producers of fossil fuels - mainly coal.

According to the IPCC, wind and solar energy would need to account for more than a third of production by 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.
