In brief from China: price increases at Tongwei and Jolywood; new factory for Trina and GCL; Solargiga in thefirst half of the year

China's cumulative PV installations surpassed the country's total wind capacity at the end of August. Solar is now

the third largest source of energy in China, after coal-fired power and hydropower. At the end of August, the country had a combined capacity of 1,311 GW of coal-fired power, 403 GW of hydro, 350 GW of PV and 345 GW of wind.

As the price of wafers has not changed this week, the increase in cell prices probably means a shortage of cell supply.

Tongwei announced an increase in 210mm cell prices from RMB 1.30 ($0.18)/W to RMB 1.33/W. It has also increased the prices of 182mm cells to RMB1.33/W and its 166mm cells to RMB1.31/W.

Jolywood increased the price of its 182 mm bifacial solar cells to RMB/W 1.44, and the price of its 210 mm bifacial cells to RMB/W 1.45.

Trina Solar is building a 15 GW cell and panel factory in Huaian (Anhui province)

GCL Technology will build a production unit in Wuhai (Inner Mongolia) with a capacity of 100,000 tonnes of silicon to increase its capacity to 500,000 tonnes and 150,000 tonnes of non silicon to increase its capacity to 300,000 tonnes.

Solargiga Energy reported first-half revenue of RMB3.1bn (up from RMB2.8bn last year) and profit of RMB67.7m (up from RMB61.3m). It shipped 2.2 GW of ingots and wafers in the January-June period, and 1.3 GW of panels. The company will increase its ingot, wafer and panel capacity this year to 6.2 GW, 4.5 GW and 7.2 GW currently, to 7.4 GW, 7.4 GW and 8.2 GW respectively.
