In brief from China: cell production capacity, the ten major cell manufacturers, new plant for HJT, 24 GW installed in China in 5 months, 100,000 tonne silicon plant planned

- The China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA) reported this week that

that the world's total solar cell production capacity reached 423 GW by the end of 2021, 90% more than at the end of the previous year, when total capacity reached 224 GW. China's total cell production capacity reached 361 GW at the end of last year, according to the association. Total cell production for 2021 was 198 GW.

Editor's note This means that cell manufacturers are anticipating very strong demand and need to be ready. They are waiting for silicon to become sufficiently available to use their capacities.

- The Chinese manufacturers Tongwei, Longi, JA Solar, Aiko Solar, Trina Solar, Jinko, Runergy and CSI occupy the top eight positions in the world ranking of solar cell producers, followed by the only non-Chinese company - Hanwha Q Cells - in 9th position and the Chinese manufacturer UniePV, which managed to reach 10th position.

- Golden Glass is to invest RMB 4.2 billion ($627 million) in a 4.8 GW heterojunction solar cell (HJT) factory in Jiuquan City, Gansu province. The company is currently developing a 1.2 GW HJT cell manufacturing plant in Suzhou.

Editor's note There is a craze for this technology, especially among new companies, which see it as a way of finding a place for themselves in a highly competitive market.

- China's National Energy Administration (NEA) estimates that new photovoltaic installations totalled 24 GW in the first five months of the year, bringing its cumulative installed photovoltaic capacity to 327.9 GW. (Editor's note: we would have liked a year-on-year comparison).

- Silicon manufacturer GCL Technology announced this week that it is to build a silicon production plant with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes.
