Large investments in RE in 2021. This is the effect of the pandemic

Mercom Capital estimates that the various investments in 2021 have reached $27.8 billion (€24.4 billion). This is an increase

of 91% over 2020. This is also the highest figure since 2010 when investment reached $37 billion

Investment companies and private investors provided the solar industry with $4.5 billion (€3.9 billion), 281% more than in 2020 ($1.2 billion).

Solar companies raised $7.5 billion (€6.6 billion) on the stock market, 49% more than the previous year ($5.1 billion). The IPO of US systems technology specialist Shoals Technologies alone accounted for $2.2 billion of this total. Ten solar companies went public in 2021.

Loans to solar companies totalled $15.8bn (€13.8bn), up 91% from $8.3bn the previous year, according to Mercom Capital.

126 corporate M&A transactions took place last year. The sale of 280 large solar projects totalled 69 gigawatts; 231 projects totalling 40 gigawatts were sold in 2020.

Editor's note: The 2020 pandemic told investors that renewables were resilient to containment, and provided production while oil and gas plants could be crippled by blackouts. They have learned their lesson and are investing heavily in this type of infrastructure, hence the 91% year-on-year increase in capital invested in this sector, and especially the increased inflow of capital (+281%) from private investors and investment companies
