JinkoSolar diversifies its silicon supply

JinkoSolar has placed an order for 70,000 tonnes of silicon over five years with the German company Wacker Chemie (Editor's note: that is 14,000 tonnes per year, which is not much).

This comes against the backdrop of a global surge in silicon prices.

Shipments of JinkoSolar's solar panels have reportedly been seized by US customs authorities in recent weeks due to the application of a withholding and release order (WRO) for products using silicon manufactured by Hoshine Silicon Industry.

It has also invested in the construction of silicon producer Xinte Energy's 100,000 tonne plant in Inner Mongolia

Editor's note: The accelerated diversification of supply sources indicates that JinkoSolar was a bit too dependent on Hoshine's silicon. It dilutes this supply from Xinjiang and makes it more difficult to trace the silicon used.
