Solar energy is the world's leading energy source, but only accounts for 12% of production.
In 2017, 98 GW of solar power was installed worldwide according to Bloomberg NEF, which is much more than
plants of other fossil or renewable technologies. Investment in solar power reaches $161bn, an increase of 18% over 2016. They also represent 57% of total RE, or $280 billion excluding the construction of large hydroelectric plants. This corresponds to 143 GW of RE. Fossil fuel facilities reached 70 GW.
Clean energy sources accounted for 61% of the additional electricity generation capacity, but provided only 12% of the electricity generation (compared to 5% in 2007).
China spent $157 billion in 2017, 31% more than in 2016, 68% of which was spent on solar (53 GW).
