Two inaugurations took place in December in Occitanie: Hyport and Lhyfe projects

Two inaugurations took place in December in the Occitanie region:

The Hyport project

Europe's first green hydrogen production and distribution station in an airport zone, located at Toulouse-Blagnac airport,

was inaugurated on 4 December by Hyport, a company owned by Engie Solutions and the Agence régionale de l'énergie et du climat -0Occitanie (Arec).

Green hydrogen (H2O) is obtained by electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable energy sources, which separates the hydrogen atoms from the oxygen atoms.

A production unit is located in the airport area, to refuel aircraft tractors and generators.

The second unit, located next door but outside the airport zone, will refuel five hydrogen-powered buses, including three shuttle buses that transport passengers to the aircraft and car parks.

The production station supplies 400 kg of hydrogen per day. One kg of hydrogen will enable a light vehicle to travel 100 km.

The Lhyfe project:

A production unit was inaugurated in December to the north-east of Toulouse. It will come on stream in the first half of 2024. It will produce two tonnes a day of green hydrogen. It will be delivered by container to distribution stations in the region at a competitive price compared with diesel.

A second production site has been set up at Port la Nouvelle (Aude), which will eventually have a production capacity of 16 tonnes of green hydrogen a day.

There are now eight distribution stations in the Occitanie region, enabling heavy goods vehicles to travel throughout the country. To encourage the use of hydrogen, the Occitanie region will be distributing €6.6 million to encourage hauliers to buy hydrogen-powered vehicles, which cost between 30% and 50% more than diesel-powered vehicles.
