Global financing of the solar sector in 2023

Global corporate financing in the solar sector has increased by 42% in 2023 compared to 2022, according to Mercom Capital. Total private financing of

34.3 billion involved 160 transactions in the biggest year for solar financing since 2010. In 2022, the amounts were $24.1 billion in 175 transactions.

Debt financing was the biggest chunk in 2023, accounting for $20 billion across 69 transactions and up 67% year-on-year.

Public markets financing totalled $7.4 billion, 45% more than the $5.1 billion in 2022.

M&A activity fell by 25% in 2023, from 128 transactions in 2022 to 96 in 2023. In addition, there were 231 large-scale solar acquisitions in 2023 compared with 268 in 2022, with a nameplate capacity of 45.4 GW compared with 66 GW the previous year.

Venture capital investment in solar energy remained stable year-on-year, rising from $7 billion to $6.9 billion.
