Industry news in brief: financing for Midsummer's thin films in Sweden, Canada's Heliene increases its capacity

Sweden's Midsummer receives €32 million from the European Union

to build a 200 MW CIGS thin-film production plant in Sweden (photo). The plant is due to produce thin-film cells suitable for European roofs in the first quarter of 2026.

The company announced in March that the perovskite-CIGS solar cell had achieved an efficiency of 24.9%.

Midsummer is also building a solar cell and panel production plant in Italy, independent of the Swedish factory.

Canada's Heliene is doubling its PV panel production capacity in the United States to 300 MW and adding a second 500 MW line. The company plans to manufacture PERC panels until December 2024, while TOPCon panels will be produced from February 2024. There will be an overlap of PERC and TOPCon throughout 2024 across the company's three manufacturing lines.
