The central role played by environmental, social and governance (ESG) compliance and procurement

On the second day of the Solar & Storage Live conference in Birmingham, England, speakers highlighted the central role played by environmental, social and governance (ESG) compliance and procurement. Chain of custody is beginning to play a role in the solar industry.

The panellists also expressed the view that manufacturers wishing to access the world's largest markets will need to open up their operations to social and moral scrutiny.

Hanwha Qcells says that half of the conversations at their sales events focus on the ethical approaches of the module manufacturer, with questions such as "How do we source modules?" "How can we ensure traceability throughout the supply chain?"

A similar policy already exists in the United States, with the Uyghur law on the prevention of forced labour.

Editor's note Isn't there a big difference between the American approach, which consists of fighting China and its hold on Xinjiang, and the European approach, which emphasises environmental, social and governance (ESG) sourcing? The philosophy, the aim and the strategy are different.
