Women in the photovoltaic sector

Around 40% of the global photovoltaic industry workforce is made up of women, according to IRENA. Women are mainly hired for administrative positions (58%), for their scientific skills (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) (38%) and in non-scientific positions (35%).

Of all renewable energy technologies, solar photovoltaics is the "fastest growing" sector, accounting for more than a third of the total renewable energy workforce (13.7 million), according to the study.

China, which is home to almost all photovoltaic manufacturing, has the largest number of workers at 2.76 million. India employs 281,000 workers. The United States will have the third-largest workforce in the solar photovoltaic sector in 2022, with 264,000 employees. Brazil provides work for 241,000 people. Japan added less capacity in 2021 than the previous year, with 127,000 people. Europe accounted for around 11% of the total workforce in the solar photovoltaic industry, with 540,000 workers in 2022.
