A solar power plant to run trains in Spain

Spanish rail operator Renfe is to build a 20 MW photovoltaic plant to power its trains near Valladolid. The experiment is due to run for five years.

In 2021,

Renfe has offered 233 million euros to develop 390 MW of self-consumption solar capacity for its high-speed trains. The company also plans to cover more than 40% of the electricity consumption of 14 maintenance bases with 11 MW of photovoltaic panels for self-consumption.

According to the UK climate change charity 10:10, a solar power plant could theoretically be connected to any traction substation and supply between 5 and 10 km of track in both directions.
