Watch out for fluctuations in the price of lithium!

On 23 May, the auction of a lithium brine lake in China's Qinghai province attracted just one buyer. A total capacity of 32 tonnes of lithium carbonate was offered at a starting price of 295,000 RMB per tonne.

According to TrendForce data, the market price of battery-grade lithium carbonate in China ranged from RMB 290,000 to RMB 320,000 per tonne on 23 May, with an average of RMB 305,000 per tonne.

A key material for the Li-ion battery industry, the price of lithium carbonate has fluctuated considerably since 2022, falling from nearly RMB 600,000 per tonne in November 2022 to less than RMB 180,000 per tonne at the end of April. Since then, prices have rebounded to the RMB 300,000 per tonne level.

Lithium carbonate prices fell to their lowest level for nearly six months in April. Market prices for battery-grade lithium carbonate in China ranged from RMB 170,000 to 190,000 per tonne, with an average of RMB 180,000 per tonne. For industrial grade lithium carbonate, market prices ranged from RMB 120,000 to 140,000 per tonne, with an average of RMB 130,000 per tonne.

Editor's note: What we need to remember is the rapidity of fluctuations in the price of lithium, and hence its repercussions on the price of batteries, and hence the attractiveness of electric vehicles compared with cars.

While the high price of lithium in 2022 put the brakes on the sale of electric vehicles in 2023, the opposite could happen in 2024, with an increase in sales!
