New form of organic solar cell developed in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has developed a new form of organic solar cell (OSC), which has recorded a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of

of 19.3%, the highest among binary OSCs.

The researchers used a heterojunction solar cell, with "more ordered molecular stacking and favourable molecular aggregation" within the heterojunction, improving the overall efficiency of the cell.

"This new discovery will make CSO research an exciting field and is likely to create tremendous opportunities in applications such as portable electronics and building-integrated photovoltaic systems."
