Europe increasingly dependent on Chinese panels

In March, China exported 21 GW, 43% more than in February and 56% more than in March 2022. The monthly export volume of 21.2 GW exceeded that of last year's peak season, demonstrating

strong demand from overseas markets in 2023. China exported a total of 50.9 GW of panels in 2023. Global demand is expected to increase more than forecast this year.

In March, Europe imported 12.5 GW of panels from China, up 49% month-on-month from 8.4 GW in February and up 76% year-on-year from March last year. In 2023, the EU imported 29.5 GW of panels from China, 77% more than in the same period last year.

In 2022, Europe imported 87 GW of panels from China, whereas it installed between 40 and 45 GW. This reflects a certain amount of stock. The considerable increase in European imports indicates a deflation of stocks. Another factor is that the Chinese are sending panels at the start of the season to supply the market.

Editor's note European imports are growing faster than sales in other regions of the world. They account for 58% of Chinese exports. Europe is becoming increasingly dependent on Chinese deliveries every month. It will be increasingly difficult to reduce this dependence in the future.
