TÜV recommendations for panels installed on balconies

The rapid growth in the use of solar panels on balconies has been fuelled by the high cost of electricity in Germany. This phenomenon has prompted the German technical inspection association TÜV to offer advice on installation and use.

In Germany, solar panels are permitted up to 600 W.

They pay for themselves in just a few years (often five). They need to face south without shade, have a 35-degree slope, have a power supply of 2,000 kWh per year and have an electrical socket nearby.

The photovoltaic balcony system generally consists of one or two solar panels and an inverter, which may be integrated into the panel or attached separately. The association recommends that you follow the manufacturer's instructions when installing the system. All building regulations must be complied with during installation. The façade insulation must not be damaged when the panels are installed.

In addition, permission must be obtained from the owner or housing association before installation. The installation must be registered with the local grid operator.
