In brief from China: silicon at its highest, LDK factory, Akome, price increase at LONGi and Tongwei

The China Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Association reports that the price of silicon this week reached 270 RMB ($40.39)/kg including VAT. This is the highest level since 2011.

The weekly average price was RMB 267/kg. The price increase is due to both a shortage of silicon metal supply and a growing demand for panels.

Members of the Chinese metal industry have stated that the price of silicon should increase due to high demand. It is currently worth 226 RMB/kg ($39.90), excluding VAT. Last week, prices for M10 and G12 wafers remained stable at RMB 6.79 and RMB 9.12, respectively.

Wednesday's earthquakes in Sichuan province affected three ingot casting plants with a total capacity of 36.2 GW. The lower production rates could have a negative impact on output and thus on wafer prices.

LDK, a unit of Haiyuan Material, plans to invest CNY355 million in a 600 MW plant for the manufacture of N-type heterojunction solar cells (HJT). The plant will be built in Xinyu, Jiangxi province.

China's Akome will install more heterojunction panel production lines to have a production capacity of 6 GW. They will probably use 210mm cells to achieve a power conversion rate of up to 24.5%.

LONGi and Tongwei announced new prices for wafers and solar cells. Longi has left most of its product prices unchanged, but Tongwei has increased them slightly, pricing its M6 cells at RMB 1.16 ($0.17)/W and its M10 cells at RMB 1.19/W. The price of its G12 product remained unchanged at RMB 1.17/W. Longi maintained the prices of its M10 (182mm), M6 (166mm) and G1 (158.75mm) products at RMB6.86, RMB5.72 and RMB5.52 per piece, respectively.
