A new candidate to replace lithium ion
Alongside the most common lithium-ion batteries, new technologies are emerging: sodium-ion, zinc-ion and now magnesium-ion.
This search for an alternative to lithium-ion stems from its shortcomings: the concentration of materials in South America, the scarcity of cobalt and lithium, and above all fires.
Magnesium-ion batteries offer the following advantages: low cost, absence of crystalline dendrites, abundant magnesium reserves, non-toxicity and high energy storage performance. Spanish-Chinese-Bulgarian researchers have achieved a final voltage of 3.1 V and an energy density of 335 Wh/kg, or 60% of that of a lithium-ion battery. For the moment, there are only laboratory tests. We also need to see how the battery performs in mass production.
