Official announcement of the extension of the 3SUN plant (ENEL subsidiary) in Italy

Enel plans to invest around €600 million in the expansion of its panel manufacturing plant in southern Italy (Catania). The European Commission will contribute around

118 million to the total sum. This will enable the Italian company to expand its 3Sun heterojunction panel factory from 200 MW to 3 GW.

Enel Green Power's 3SUN plant, which currently has a capacity of 200 MW, will be increased to 400 MW in September 2023, and will then reach a capacity of 3 GW per year of bifacial photovoltaic panels by July 2024. At a later date, production of bifacial heterojunction photovoltaic cells and panels using tandem cells is planned.

Editor's note: This is good news, but it is also good news for Meyer Burger, which has already put its plant into operation. We can be confident in its future because 3SUN is backed by a major energy group that will be able to hold out for as long as it takes to set up the plant in its environment, especially as 3SUN will be supplying its panels to the power plants built by the group.
