Good practice in agrivoltaics according to the Italians

Three Italian associations in the renewable energy sector have drawn up a code of conduct for agrivoltaics. They have identified with extreme precision the surface area authorised for electricity production in the two most common agrivoltaic configurations:

a°) raised solar panels : they must be placed at a minimum height of 2.1 metres in order to guarantee full agricultural activity and, at the same time, ensure the creation of a cooler than usual microclimate in summer and warmer during the winter months.

b°) photovoltaic systems deployed between rows of crops. They can also be designed to include several rows of panels in order to optimise crop yields.

To be compatible with the proposed standards, a photovoltaic project combined with agriculture should comply with three main requirements : * the authorisation of experts such as an agronomist or zootechnician, depending on the agricultural activity; * the adoption of an agricultural yield monitoring system; * and the limitation of the area intended for non-agricultural activity to no more than 30% of the total project area.

The three associations added that projects based on raised panels should be given priority, as their deployment allows full agricultural continuity.
