Prices for PPAs in the United States in 2021 have moved in different directions

The BloombergNEF study(Global clean energy purchases by PPAs in 2021) indicates that companies have purchased a record 31 GW of renewable energy in 2021. Most of this capacity was purchased

in the Americas, with 17 GW coming from the United States and 3.3 GW from other nations in North and South America. Europe signed up for 12 GW. Asia fell back with 2 GW. Amazon and Microsoft led the purchases with 38% of the total, including 8.2 GW of solar power.

All these record purchases have taken place despite ever-increasing prices in the solar industry. LevelTen Energy's recent "Q4 2021 PPA Price Index" shows that prices rose by 5.7% to $34.25/MWh.

Price increases varied by region. For example, the California CAISO remained stable, while PJM and SPP rose by 15% and 15.1% respectively. Prices began to rise in early 2020 due to increased demand, macroeconomic fluctuations, supply chain issues and a confluence of other factors.

Rising electricity prices around the world are not the cause of the ever-increasing demand for solar, as 67 companies joined the RE100 last year, bringing the total number of companies committed to using 100% renewable energy to 355,
