New technique to destroy used panels
The French research institute CEA-Liten has created a technique that uses a diamond wire to cut photovoltaic cells and separate
the glass front of the panel from the polymer back sheet. The process is claimed to be environmentally friendly and energy efficient.
A diamond wire for cutting the photovoltaic cells separates the glass front of the panel from the polymer back sheet. The recovered glass can then be recycled in a clean process. A hydro-metallurgical treatment is also used to separate and recover the various metals used in production.
