Concentrated PV panel to be applied to spherical surfaces

Japanese scientists have produced a prototype concentration PV panel that could be applied to spherical surfaces with a radius of curvature of 100 mm and under irradiation.

exterior of a single sun.

The panel measures 32 mm × 40 mm, with a thickness of 4.1 mm. It weighs 2.84 kg/m². It is based on a silicon concentrating lens, a thermoplastic polyurethane sheet and a rigid triple-junction III-V solar cell.

"When perfectly adapted to a highly curved 3D surface, the prototype panel achieves an outdoor energy conversion efficiency of 15.4% and the daily generated electrical output improves up to a maximum of 190% compared to a PV panel that can be expanded without concentration."The 4.10mm x 4.95mm triple junction cells are encapsulated in the expandable silicone lens. The panel has the same structure as the light-emitting diode (LED) housings.

"The ratio between the total cell area and the active power generating area of the module (32 mm × 40 mm) was 31.7%. The ratio of the active cell area to the active panel area was 28.3 per cent," said the academics.
