Transparent glazing for greenhouses

Australia's ClearVue has begun installing transparent solar glazing at the Murdoch University Cereal Research Centre in Perth. PV cells

are placed on the edges of the glass panes. These incorporate nanoparticles and a selective spectral coating on the rear outer surface, which allows 70% of the light to pass through but redirects infrared and UV light to the edges, where it is collected by the solar cells.

This technology provides a minimum of 30 watts per square metre and offers 70% transparency.

When used in crop greenhouses, this glazing has a temperature range of +/- 2° from the optimum temperature, allowing an increased plant growth rate of up to 20-30%, compared to a temperature range of +/- 6° from the optimum temperature in traditional greenhouses.
