Pandemic-related changes in electricity demand in the United States

During the pandemic, energy consumption in New York City decreased by up to 18% compared to normal hours. This is a consequence of the decrease in consumption in the commercial sector. In the rest of the state, on the other hand, the decrease is only 8%.

MISO:

The first notable impact of the pandemic on the territory of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) was a decrease in the speed of the morning demand surge. School and office closures prompted many employees to work from home. They have contributed to a steady decline in morning demand levels. For example, the magnitude of the increase in demand from 5:00 am to 9:00 am decreased as a result of working from home.

The flattening of demand has shifted the peak hour of demand to the early afternoon.

Historically, the normal spring or autumn MISO load curve has distinct peaks in the morning and evening. They occur when Midwesterners leave their homes in the morning and return home at night.

With containment, the load profile has changed: the wake-up time is later and there is an increased need for lighting during the day. The later rise in demand in the morning and the absence of a sharp rise in the evening led the two peaks to converge in the early afternoon.

The North East :

In a typical spring, New York and New England experience a surge in demand between 5 and 8 am. The peak usually occurs between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on clear, sunny days; somewhere between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on overcast days. The evening demand peak occurs between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

With the pandemic and the lack of travel to the office, the vast majority of the population is waking up later in the day and will start their evening earlier.

In times of containment, demand on extremely clear and sunny days now peaks between 8:00 am and 9:00 am in New York City. The morning demand peak in unstable weather is in the late morning, usually occurring between 10 a.m. and 12 noon, and sometimes as late as 1 p.m.

In the Northeast, gas demand in March 2020 was well below expectations, mainly due to weakening commercial demand.
