RE will drive down conventional power generation in the UK this summer

The production of renewable energy during the summer could force the UK's national electricity grid to reduce the output of coal, gas or nuclear power stations. That's what the official forecast says. Last summer,

a significant drop in demand on the network had been observed during the summer, due to the production of renewable energy. However, the United Kingdom is installing 1 GW more solar power per year and has reached the level of 13 GW of photovoltaic power connected to local grids.

Already coal-fired power stations seem to be doomed because of massive generator shutdowns due to uncompetitive costs compared to the price of RE.

The emergence of RE brings to light the problems of intermittent production. Batteries could help to manage the grid, in addition to the new frequency response system.
