A solar+storage offer at the Chilean auction
At the last auction in Chile, at least one of the winning bids seems to unite storage and solar energy: Spanish Cox Energia
earned 145 GWh at a price of $0.0344/kWh by providing electricity at night. The Spanish company Acciona had already offered to supply electricity at night in a previous auction.
The lowest bid in this tender was $0.02148/kWh.
Lazard had estimated that the lower limit of the average price of electricity from a solar power plant would be $0.046/kWh. In Australia, the lowest cost would have been $0.037/kWh.
In addition to this cost of electricity, Cox Energia has to invest in the storage system. Probably in a lithium-ion system, the cost of which is expected to drop the fastest. Lazard estimates that the cost of storage should reach $0.261/kWh in the most optimistic situation and could drop by 36% over the next five years, bringing it down to $0.167/kWh in 2021. Between now and then, many things could happen, technology could even change... Unless this project is abandoned.
