UK report analyses storage, demand-side solution, and interconnection with foreign electricity grids
The storage market in the UK has already been boosted by a 20 MW frequency response project and a forthcoming 200 MW tender. This call for tenders was postponed after the publication of the parliamentary report on energy. Three means have been analysed: storage, demand response, and interconnection with foreign power grids.
For storage, current regulatory conditions are hampering its development and parliamentarians have therefore called on the government to urgently amend the regulations.
For demand side adaptation, the report recommends a strategy to unlock existing potential.
Interconnection can help balance the grid but the UK does not have enough low carbon installations and would have to import them unless capacity is developed.
In general, the parliamentary committee seems to believe that current regulations and infrastructure are inadequate to deal with modern energy systems.
