German production and consumption in the first half of the year

German solar power production fell by 5.9% in the first half of 2023 due to poorer weather conditions in 2023 than in 2022. However, the share of photovoltaic

rose from 11.2% last year to 11.9% this year.

The share of wind power rose from 25.6% in the first half of 2022 to 28.6%, surpassing that of coal-fired power, which fell considerably to 27.1% (first half of 2022: 31.3%).

Overall, electricity generation amounted to 234 terawatt hours (TWh), a fall of 11.4%. Consumption, or the total amount of electricity available on the grid, also fell (-6.9%), but at a much slower rate than generation. The difference is due to a significant increase in imports (+30.8%) and a fall in exports (-18.1%). Nevertheless, German electricity exports (32.6 TWh) still exceeded electricity imports (30.6 TWh) in the first half of 2023.

The reasons for the fall in the total amount of electricity available are to be found in the cost-cutting efforts linked to high energy prices, the economic slowdown, particularly in the steel industry, and in the energy sector.conomic slowdown, particularly in energy-intensive industries, and the closure of the last three nuclear power stations on 15 April.
