Comparison of silicon prices in and outside China

The price of silicon continues its downward trend for the fifth week running. The world silicon marker (Opis' benchmark valuation for silicon manufactured outside China) returned to $35.79 per kilogram on 9 May,

a fall of 0.12% in one week.

The scarcity of transactions is a current feature of the market. There is a big difference between the global silicon market and the Chinese domestic market. Average prices assessed by Opis fell by 8.8% to RMB158.83/kg this week, or $22.86/kg. Above all, this indicates significant pressure on Chinese producers. They have a surplus of silicon and stocks are swelling.

Wafer production in May is expected to reach 49 to 50 gigawatts. The market believes that the price of wafers should fall, as current wafer production is sufficient and the price of silicon continues to fall.

NDLR What is surprising is the difference in the price of silicon in China and outside China. It is 56% higher. Why is this?
