A new way to produce graphene cheaply

American company Salgenx has developed a way of producing graphene on demand from its saltwater flow battery. It exploits the electrochemical properties of the battery's cathode to exfoliate the graphite into individual layers of graphene.

The company claims it can produce graphene for less than $1.25 per gram, providing storage companies with an additional revenue stream.

The membrane-free saltwater redox flow battery charges and discharges using an electrolyser that splits sodium chloride (NaCl) into sodium (Na) and chlorine.
