The German government's decision is contested by the trade unions

According to several media reports, the German government is planning to skim off the "exceptional profits" of electricity market companies with retroactive effect from1 September.

This measure would apply to renewable energies, nuclear power, mineral oils, waste and lignite. Coal-fired power stations would be exempt, as would storage facilities, natural gas, biomethane and speciality gases.

The German Renewable Energy Federation (Bundesverband Erneuerbare Energien, BEE) rejects the government's plan to skim off "windfall profits" by taxing sales prices (the scheme proposed by the Commission is €180 per MWh). Instead, it is proposing a tax on excess profits.

Editor's note There is an interesting contrast between the decisions that the European Commission wants to see taken and the people who use these decisions. We are a long way from unity between the two entities. One wants unity (union) whatever the cost; the other wonders why it should follow decisions made by an undemocratically elected authority!
