German tax benefits for residential PV installations

The German government has decided to offer tax relief for solar installations of less than 30 kW: the owner of an installation on a detached house or commercial property will no longer have to pay income tax.

on electricity yield from the beginning of 2023. This tax exemption also applies to multi-family homes and mixed-use properties with a photovoltaic system with an output of less than 15 kW.

In addition, value-added tax (VAT) will no longer be payable on the purchase, import and installation of photovoltaic systems and energy storage systems. The condition for exemption is that the systems are installed on or near private houses or flats, as well as on public and other buildings used for activities serving the common good.

Editor's note This is a welcome initiative. The German government is doing what it can. Secondly, installers need to be able to persuade owners, so they need to be able to show customers the benefits of an installation, and thirdly, installation costs must not be prohibitive.
