How to achieve fast EV charging?

The full charge of an electric vehicle is slow, not available everywhere and provides limited range. These three factors limit the spread of electric vehicles. Therefore, researchers propose

that vehicles share the charge with each other while driving.

They propose to deploy mobile charging stations, by installing huge batteries mounted in trucks. These could recharge several vehicles at once, much as small military aircraft can be refuelled in flight by a tanker.

Another technology advocated by Stellantis

The parent company of Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, etc. has developed the Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT). This system relies on coils placed under the road surface to charge the electric vehicle. The project uses wireless EV charging technology from Israeli company Electreon, which has electrified 1.6 km of road in Sweden.

The results showed that DWPT allows a battery electric vehicle like the Fiat New 500 to drive at normal highway speeds without consuming the energy stored in its battery. The tests show that the efficiency of the energy flow from the asphalt to the car is comparable to the usual efficiency of fast charging stations, so that the driver does not need to stop to recharge. In addition, measurements of the magnetic field strength prove that there is no impact on the driver and passengers.

Editor's note It is certain that the spread of electric vehicles will require faster recharging, more widespread use of recharging stations and greater vehicle autonomy. If we cannot find a battery solution, we must find another viable and effective solution!
