What is the degree of reconstruction of a PV industry in the US?

Sustained efforts by the US to boost domestic solar PV manufacturing capacity by imposing anti-dumping duties on Chinese panels have reportedly failed completely, the Rystad Energy study reveals.

They have failed to reduce the overall US dependence on imports, which are expected to reach a new annual high in 2021.

The US is on track to import a record 27.8 gigawatts (GW) of solar PV panels in 2021 from various countries, up from 26.7 GW last year. Solar PV imports for 2021 will total $8.9 billion, a marginal increase from the 2020 total of $8.7 billion.

The goal of boosting domestic manufacturing capacity has not been achieved. The US has filled its supply gap with panels from other Asian countries. By 2021, US-made solar PV panels are expected to total 5.2 GW, compared to the 27.8 GW expected from imports. Of this 5.2 GW, about half will come from thin-film panel manufacturing, mainly produced by First Solar,

Editor's note: There is an information vacuum on the creation of a US PV industry. There have been announcements of production plants several years ago, but there is no information on the current level of production of these units. In the absence of information, we can only welcome Rystad Energy's comment, without being able to certify its authenticity.
