In the United States, renewables outstrip coal

In the United States, renewables surpass coal for the first time in 130 years.

The trend looks set to continue as power companies have announced plans to close 13 coal-fired power plants this year.

Coal consumption in the United States is at its lowest level since 1964. Natural gas-fired electricity has replaced the output of coal-fired power plants, which have closed as a result.

Editor's note It is likely that these closures were decided before the pandemic and its corollary, the reduction in demand for electricity. New closures are going to be decided in the coming months, recognising the growing importance of renewable energies.
