Fourfold increase in lithium-sulphur battery lifetime

Lithium-sulphur batteries appear to be a good alternative to lithium ion batteries because they are much lighter; they can store five times more energy than lithium ion batteries because they have a much higher energy density.

than other types of rechargeable batteries. Sulphur is a cheap and readily available product. In addition, lithium-sulphur technology does not require a fluorinated compound in the electrolyte.

However, their life is much shorter due to the rapid deterioration of the electrolyte and electrode caused by the normal charge/discharge process. The speed of creation and development of dendrites is much faster than that of lithium ion batteries. However, these dendrites are likely to puncture the insulating film and decompose the electrolyte.

A team from the University of Texas at Austin has discovered that the lifetime of lithium sulphur batteries is four times longer if the electrode is covered with tellurium. This coating prevents unwanted reactions between the electrode and the electrolyte. The coating process is very simple and does not require expensive equipment. In short, this solution complements the already high price/performance ratio of lithium-sulphur technology.
