Switzerland wants to increase the importance of RE

The Swiss government intends to open up the national energy market from the beginning of 2021. It has also decided to provide additional support for renewable energies by offering

to the electricity sector greater security of planning and investment, while at the same time enhancing security of supply.

The cost of the redesigned incentives (all for renewables) will amount to approximately 215 million Swiss francs ($221.2 million) per year. The incentives will be financed through a levy collected from the grid.

The government has also decided that large consumers (more than 100,000 kWh per year), households and small businesses will be able to freely choose their electricity suppliers.

Solar energy producers, for example, will be able to sell surplus electricity locally. Market opening will therefore facilitate the development of local solutions, such as local electricity markets or energy communities.
