How do you achieve a solid electrolyte battery?

How do you achieve a solid electrolyte battery? There are four challenges: stable chemical interfaces between the electrolyte and electrodes, efficient tools for characterisation, sustainable manufacturing processes and design from the outset for recycling, according to researchers at California-based UCSD.

Solid electrolyte, rather than liquids and gels, offers promising potential for energy storage, but stable chemical interfaces between electrolyte and electrodes must be managed.

Solid electrolyte is generally less transparent than liquid alternatives. It is more complicated to obtain information about the functioning of the battery at the nanometer scale.

It is essential to design solid electrolyte batteries with recycling and reuse, while having a strong supply chain that can be scaled up conveniently and affordably. Attention must therefore be paid to cost-effective reuse and recycling.
