GlobalWafers to produce 150mm silicon carbide wafers
Taiwan's GlobalWafers, a subsidiary of SAS, to produce 150mm silicon carbide wafers from bulk SiC crystals produced by US-based GT Advanced Technologies
This type of insert is in great demand
for the manufacture of electric vehicles. They could be for new generation inverters. Demand is expected to increase in the coming years
Silicon carbide based inverters offer higher power density, less cooling and lower overall system costs than conventional inverters. However, defects at the interface between the silicon carbide and the insulating material (silicon dioxide) are still a major barrier to bringing this technology to mass production. To date, inverter manufacturers have only produced prototypes or pilot projects in silicon carbide.
